Annual plants. Spiklet with 3-15 flowers, glumesdorsally heavily inflated; lemma with 5-9 veins, without keel, but with awn arising from between bidentate apex.

Panicle open, branches several times longer than spikelets. Spikelets 3-4 cm long, about 6 mm wide, narrowed upward. Lower glumes about 10 mm long. Lemma large, lanceolate, 12-15 mm, at apex with acute teeth, awn 18-22 mm long, arising 3-6 mm under apex.
Recognizable by very long awns. Short-lived forage grass in deserts and dry mountains.
Stony and debris slopes, screes, waterside pebbles, sometimes as weed in crops and along roads (Grubov 2001).
